When the Germans started bombing the Cornish ports in 1941, Evelyn Hugo?s parents sought safety by marching their children fifteen miles to a derelict cottage on the north coast, carrying all their possessions in the baby?s pram. It should have been an idyllic setting for a ten-year old to grow up in, but the hardships of the war years were compounded by increasing economic strife as the family grew bigger ? within a few years she found herself the eldest of nine - and her father struggled to earn a living wage. Eve?s problems did not end with the war. Constantly picked on and bullied by her mother and forced to work around the clock, she endured years of oppression and hardship before finally breaking free. This is the moving, and at times disturbing, story of the seven years Eve and her family spent in the hamlet of Roscroggan.
