The branch of medicine which deals with the disorders of the nervous system is known as neurology. Some of the diseases which are studied under neurology are stroke, dementia and meningitis. When a biological cell ceases to carry out its functions properly, it results in poor blood flow to the brain giving rise to stroke. There are two main categories of stroke - ischemic and hemorrhagic. The ischemic stroke occurs due to interruption of the blood supply to brain. Hemorrhagic strokes arise from the rupture of a blood vessel or an abnormal vascular structure. The reasons of ischemic stroke include blood clotting, embolism, decrease in blood supply, and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. A hemorrhagic stroke is caused by bleeding directly into the brain or into the space between its membranes. High blood pressure is the primary risk factor for stroke.
