The story starts with the hero of the story a young doctor (with a doctor degree on mentality) who comes to see his uncle in India from London who runs a small mental hospital in a town. On arriving there in the night he sees a light in a ward where a girl is crying and writing in a book probably her diary. Then he being a doctor thinks how can a woman who writes so well in a book be of an unsound mind?.
