Autonomy and Long-Term Care
Agich, George J. (Professor of Medical Humanities and Psychiatry; Director, Values in Medicine Program, Professor of Medical Humanities and Psychiatry; Director, Values in Medicine Program, Southern Illinois University)
The author examines the nature and significance of autonomy for long-term care. He argues that standard, liberal conceptions of autonomy as noninterference and independence have limited applicability in long-term care. A more relevant concept for long-term care is actual autonomy, which stresses the developmental and social nature of people and the priority of identification over autonomous choice.
